What a symbolic ceremony is
A symbolic ceremony is a wedding ceremony without legal effect. It is led by a celebrant, not a registrar, so every word, reading and moment can be written around your story.
Most couples sign the legal paperwork at the registry office at home, before or after the trip, and celebrate the ceremony that really matters to them in Mallorca.
Why couples choose it
It removes the paperwork of a legal wedding abroad and gives you complete freedom.
- Any language, or several, for guests from different countries
- Any setting: a finca garden, an olive grove, a terrace with sea views
- Your own vows, readings and rituals
- No residency requirements or foreign documents to translate
The legal side
A civil wedding in Spain generally requires at least one partner to be resident in Spain, which is why international couples rarely marry legally on the island. A church wedding is possible, but it involves paperwork through your home parish and should be started well in advance.
Requirements depend on your nationality, so we always recommend confirming them with your registry office. We help you choose the option that fits and plan around it.
How we plan it with you
A symbolic ceremony is simple on paper and delicate in practice. We take care of every part of it.
- Choosing the setting and the best time of day for the light
- Finding a celebrant who speaks your language
- Music, seating, flowers and the aisle
- A plan B for wind or rain
- Timings on the day, so nothing is rushed
Where to hold it
Private fincas and hotels are the most practical choice: the space is yours and ceremony and celebration can happen in the same place. Ceremonies in public spaces, such as a beach, need permission from the town hall and are more exposed to wind and passers-by.
